An excellent post. I would add though, that the change to "maybe close to enough" and "going backwards" are not coincidental, but causally related. Viewed as a backlash against the success of feminism and the "encroachment" of women into the corridors of traditional male power and privledge, the increased, unremitting and ever-earlier reduction of women to sexual objects for the gratification on men, whenever, wherever, makes sense. The covert, sometimes glaringly overt, message seems to be: "Get back to where you belong - in the kitchen, barefoot, pregnant, sober, in conservative clothing, or you'll get raped and it will be you fault."

As I have tweeted this week, the onus of consent needs to change. Now. Women should not be considered amenable sexual partners UNLESS they say no. Women are amenable sexual partners only if they say (directly, verbally) "yes". Or issue the invitation themselves.

To the victim of Steubenville - and there is only one - I send my entire empathy and love. And the message I have told many a rape survivor (in my therapy rooms): being drunk is not an invitation to be sexually used, it’s an invitation to a hangover.

Great post, and sobering perspective.

I must admit, watching America and all its noise from afar, from the "safety" of a central Europe that mostly accepts gays and has legalized same-sex marriage or a similarly legal union, that treats sex in the media with a wink instead of a pitchfork, and that increasingly and successfully prevents religion from influencing laws and politics, watching all the American school shootings, the serial killers, the rapists, the hate crimes, and the intolerant, ignorant and inhuman fucknuts in influential positions leave me breathless. I am sincerely amazed by America's delusion of being at the top of the world, the most evolved and modern country, an epitome of freedom and possibility.

Good post, Mr. O'Shea. It did cause me to reflect back to a terribly sheltered childhood where we routinely chose people through a nigger's toe or complained about nigger toe nuts. None of us had a clue as to what it meant. I'm ashamed now. But the Steubenville doesn't surprise me. Give my student population, I hear all sorts of horrific stories about their lives. Kidnapped and raped for two weeks with her 6 year old in the next room. That was the worst. Mankind is a flawed creation. Thank you for your vigilance.

If it isn't too late, I agree with almost all of these comments. I listen five or more hours a week. I've had trouble with female narrators who try to fake a male voice. Doesn't work. Slight change in inflection works. Avoid acting. Let the listener try to imagine the story. The bar idea is a good one. Since you like Burke, listen to Will Patton. He does a bit more acting in his voice, especially Clete, but I think he gets the characters. BTW, so does Burke think that. Remember that many are listening in a car or other places with noise so do not whisper. Your voice is perfect for this, just watch out that you don't trail off too far.
