When you start off with a gang of encyclopedia-peddling meth dealers, you’re off to a good start. Throw in a hot former Siamese twin who now has an interesting scar and a dead sister who serves as her bullshit meter; an almost-sweet coming of age romance between an innocent nebbish and a not-quite-so innocent Indian girl who plays Eve, but with a hamburger instead of an apple; and a criminal mastermind who’s too busy trying to deny his pedophile tendencies by pretending to mentor wayward boys instead of tending to his drugs and thugs, and you’ve really caught my attention. Put the whole thing on a low boil during a rural Florida summer amidst the trailer parks and pig farms. And then top it off with post-Marxist vegan vigilante who’d never hurt an animal, but who just might but a bullet through your brain pan – well, then you’ve got some good, unclean fun.
I’d never heard of David Liss until I spotted The Ethical Assassin on the discount table, but I’ll be getting my hands on everything else he’s got first chance I get. If you like your noir with a comedic twist and you aren’t adverse to a little philosophy alongside your mayhem, then The Ethical Assassin deserves a spot on your must-read list. Looking at his website http://davidliss.com/, seems like he’s mostly done historical novels. but based on this read, I’ll be giving them a try. If you’ve read any of his other books, I’d be very interested in what you thought.
