If you find self pimpage annoying, you can just skip this post. And I won’t take up much of you time. But I’ve got a couple pieces out this month in publications worthy of your patronage, so I’m just gonna toot my own horn here a teensy bit and hope to drum up a little business for both of these rags.
First off, there’s my experiment in Shakespearean Noir, The Bard’s Confession in the Matter of the Despoilment of the Fishmonger’s Daughter, in the current issue of NEEDLE, the noir mag brainchild of astrologically gifted Steve Weddle (seriously, I checked with Nancy Reagan’s official astrologer and she assured me that big things are in store for hepcats born on July 23). That one’s been out a couple of weeks, but you can order a copy right here, and not only will you be blown out of your shorts by some kick-ass crime fiction, your eyeballs will also get strapped to that powerful orgasmatron of awesomeness that is John Hornor Jacob’s magical ninja Design Fu. The Michelangelo-like Herr Jacobs also has, I dunno, something like 146 books coming out over the next couple of years, starting with the Faulkner meets O’Henry meets Steven King meets Lovecraft kudzu-scented heap of magnificent that is SOUTHERN GODS, which hits the shelves this August.
And, as if that weren’t enough, I have another short in the noir issue of BLACK HEART MAGAZINE, a lively little journal out of Austin that’s gotta kick ass because I can’t even connect to it’s web site through my work network — it’s prohibited content on account of *gasp* sex. Anyway, Laura Roberts, the editor at BLACK HEART, decided they hadn’t yet done enough to put the good folks of the Bible Belt off their feed, so she recruited Jimmy “The Worm” Callaway to guest edit their crime-fiction-focused noir issue. My piece, Circle of Life, is of course in perfect taste, with no sex and no violence. Just a cautionary morality tale trying to save the rest of you heathen from yourselves and get ya’ll back on the right path before it’s too late.
If you’re looking for a little nasty reading to liven up your summer, pick up one of both of these puppies.
